Please update your graphics drivers to the latest version. Some Unreal Engine 5.6 improvements may not work correctly with outdated drivers. 

This update is mostly focused on improvements and fixes under the hood. Much of the work has gone into addressing long-standing bugs, improving overall stability and performance, and laying the groundwork for faster development.

One of the biggest, though less visible, parts of this update has been the upgrade from Unreal Engine 5.4 to 5.6. This transition brings a wide range of stability, performance, and engine-level improvements, many of which are listed below. While this kind of work is not always immediately noticeable in moment-to-moment gameplay, it is an important step toward improving the game’s overall reliability and helping us move faster in the future.

Several gameplay systems have also been revisited, most notably NPC behavior, which has suffered from several issues that negatively impacted the overall PvE experience, and particularly in dungeons. These updates aim to make encounters more reliable, consistent, and enjoyable overall.

We’ve also updated parts of the interface. These changes are aimed not only at resolving issues you’ve reported, but also at making future content easier to develop and helping us address structural problems that have been slowing development over time.

While this update may not be massive in terms of visible new content, the amount of work behind it has been significant. At the same time, we’ve also been working in parallel on broader gameplay improvements, and we’ll be sharing more about those soon. 

One final note before diving into the details: we’ll now use an internal naming convention for small patches. As such, this update is called R46.

The aggro system has been entirely reviewed and debugged. These changes are aimed at making PvE combat more predictable, readable, and fair by clarifying how NPCs detect players, call for assist, maintain combat, and drop aggro.

NPCs now use distinct vision, hearing, and assist ranges, with clearer rules governing Direct Aggro and Assist Aggro. Players passing near ongoing fights should no longer unintentionally pull enemies unless they actively engage or support players already in combat.

We are especially looking for feedback on edge cases involving walls, verticality, pathing, and adjacent spaces to help us further refine the system.

Nights are now darker overall and feature a new star-filled skybox.

4.5 Super Resolution and Frame Generation with Reflex, for up to 4X generated frames on supported GPUs.

Unreal 5.6 and the latest FSR and DLSS play along much better than earlier versions, so both image quality and performance are improved from before.

In particular, upscaled graphics are now much crisper than before, so you can enjoy the game with improved performance with no visual degradation.

We've upgraded Pax Dei's underlying engine from Unreal Engine 5.4 to 5.6. While this doesn't introduce new game features, it brings substantial under-the-hood improvements that directly affect your gameplay experience.

 The global illumination and reflection systems that give PaxDei its realistic lighting have been heavily optimized for hardware ray tracing. Epic specifically targeted consistent 60 fps on current-generation hardware, freeing up CPU budget for gameplay.

 Virtual Shadow Maps now use smarter culling and caching, reducing GPU cost, especially in dense scenes with many buildings and trees.

 The system that renders millions of polygons for our world terrain and architecture now has better instance culling and draw distance management, reducing per-frame cost in crowded areas.

 More rendering work is now distributed across CPU cores, reducing single-thread bottlenecks that could cause frame dips.

 Entering new areas is smoother. Physics, terrain, and geometry registration can now run asynchronously, preventing spikes when loading new world cells.

 Parallel processing and caching for texture/mesh streaming reduce visual pop-in as you move through the world.

 GPU memory management for the Nanite streaming pool and virtual textures is now more graceful, avoiding sudden stalls from buffer resizes.

 Numerous crash fixes and improvements to the replication system reduce disconnects and desync, particularly around object destruction, ownership transfers, and server transitions.

 Multithreaded collision detection, partial sleeping islands, and improved scene queries make the physics simulation more robust under heavy load (large battles, many players on structures).

 Navmesh generation and streaming are more stable, reducing cases where NPCs could path incorrectly after world streaming events.

 Multiple memory leaks in rendering (hair/groom streaming, sparse volume textures, GPU scene data) have been resolved, improving long-session stability.

 A new reflection denoiser produces cleaner, less ghosted reflections on water, metal, and polished surfaces.

 Lumen's temporal accumulation is more stable, reducing flickering on foliage and fine geometry. Surface cache updates are now distance-driven, keeping nearby lighting more accurate.

Improved Temporal Super Resolution (TSR):

 Thin geometry like foliage and hair is more stable, with less patch flickering. Banding artifacts from precision limits have been addressed.

 Short-range AO now runs at half resolution with a denoiser, making it twice as fast while maintaining quality.

 Small objects replicate faster with better bandwidth utilization, benefiting item interactions in populated areas.

 Fixes around async destruction, dormancy flushing, and component replication reduce edge-case desyncs that could affect inventory or building state.

 Resimulation is optimized, and render interpolation for networked physics is smoother.

These improvements work automatically:  no settings changes are needed on your end. If you previously adjusted graphics settings to improve performance, this may be a good time to try raising them again.

Fixed an issue where NPCs were aggroing each other endlessly when standing nearby.

Fixed an issue where Zebians would lose aggro if they could not reach the player.

Inquisitors no longer have a weird walking animation after an aggro loss.

Fixed animal NPCs losing aggro when fighting on land covered in dropped items.

Consecrated Ground produces significantly less aggro than before.

Fixed an issue where the Windlash spell causes the wielded weapon to be invisible in some instances.

Fixing a bug where using a bow was not interrupting the emote state - it was possible to lie down and shoot with a bow.

Fixed a rare issue that prohibited player movement for a brief moment after heavy spam of short-cooldown spellcasting and LMB while already moving.

Fixed an issue where some trees in the Corrupted Plains had no collision.

Fixed an issue where sometimes characters and NPCs were not dealing or receiving damage when standing on or in gatherable plants.

Made some optimizations on the Life Drain spell that was causing performance issues.

We added a garden building set with more than 50 different pieces and decorations, including benches, statues, a fountain, new ivy patches, and hedges and trellis building pieces.

Fixed an issue with Ornamental Pillars lacking integrity with foundations and walls.

Boars will always drop Sinew and Bone Fragments.

Sheathed weapon straps are no longer visible when using Ambush.

The visibility of cloth sleeves has been fixed.

Yule Goat Mask no longer resists magical effects and now turns invisible when using Ambush.

Fixed an issue where 3D meshes for plant materials did not appear when dropped on the ground.

Disengaging the bow now has a smoother transition animation.

Improved animations to make the bow draw transition appear more natural.

Fixed character foot placement, moving briefly after stopping movement with the drawn bow.

Fixed an issue where duplicated indicators would appear on Gneiss resource nodes.

Fixed an issue where character portraits would not load or load improperly in Clan UI.

Camera pitch has been increased to allow the player to look further upwards.

Character skin no longer appears oily underneath applied tattoos.

The background colors for several building material icons have been updated to be more consistent.

Lighting the dungeons has been improved for Low and Medium settings.

Increased indoor lighting to reduce excessive darkness in buildings.

Changing mood when an emote is played no longer reverts character expressions to the original mood.

Fixed an issue causing character clothing and body parts to flicker on AMD Radeon 7800 XT GPUs.

Fixed an issue where ambient animal sounds, including foxes, could be heard at excessive distances. The frequency of fox ‘vocalizations’ has also been reduced.

Temporarily removed the Fountain sound effect, which was excessively loud and requires additional tuning.

The Charcoal recipe yields have been updated: 50 Sapwood now produces 50 Charcoal, and 100 Heartwood now produces 100 Heartwood Charcoal.

The number of items received while crafting higher tiers of Chamois recipes has been balanced.

Fixed the Craft All option that could consume extra materials when the queue was not empty.

Fixed an issue where crafting sometimes halted when crafting many items.

The Redeeming Queue has been improved with new filtering and sorting options to make management easier.

The Party UI has been enhanced to make grouping with friends and fellow adventurers faster and more intuitive. Friends and nearby players are now displayed in the party window and can be invited within 2 clicks.

Fixed an infinite loading screen issue that was affecting some players with a pending party invitation.

Fixed some infinite loading screen issues with the engine upgrade.

Fixed the Delete Character window that was not closed by pressing ESC

Fixed an issue where the Delete character option was non-functional.

Adjusted load order and added delay for loading certain parts of the map UI to eliminate flickering when the map was opened and closed repeatedly.

Fixed an issue where attempting to split a stack could fail if the player selected a bigger stack than it was possible to move.

Dueling system messages are now displayed with a Duel System sender name.

Fixed the terrain in a Kerys Wildlands ringfort, where there was an invisible hole where characters could fall.

Fixed an issue that made it impossible to place a Sign on the Hunter Stall contrary to the other stalls.

Reduced the delay between dropping items on the ground, making it easier and faster to clear inventory.

There is now a “Deselect All” option to hide all map markers.

Added keybinds for Quick Stack button (Q) and Take All button (T).

Fixed the “View in Journal” button in the crafting UI.

The chosen sorting option is maintained after canceling a sale or buying items.

It is no longer possible to interact with items through walls.

Fixed an issue where canceling a building piece selection with Esc could cause the UI to disappear.

Fixed an issue where a static landscape could briefly appear during loading screens.

Fixed an issue where the Lobby could briefly appear during province transitions.

Fixed an issue where the Lobby background could remain visible when logging out from a dungeon.

Fixed an issue where the screen could remain black after respawning or using the Petra Mea miracle.

Fixed a few issues with the Polish localization on certain clothes.

Fixed some plural issues with Polish localization enabled.

Fixed missing localizations of the various Loot piles.

Fixed inconsistencies in the decoration pieces description style.

Modified the low character detail option to remove the characters' and NPCs' shadows.

Fixed issue with the building system support calculation being stunned by cascaded collapses of complex builds.

Fixed an issue with the Ornamental Pillar and Short Ornamental Pillar supports that could cause loss of support and trigger cascading destruction of connected building pieces.

Fixed an issue that could cause players to become stuck on a loading screen after transitioning between zones in specific areas, resulting in a "203 Connection Time Out" error and preventing the affected character from logging in.

Below is a quick visual guide showing what you can expect from the updated aggro behavior.

Starting with the basics: NPCs use different ranges for vision, hearing, and assist behavior. Vision and hearing require a line of sight to the target. Assist requires line of sight to the NPC ally calling for help.

Hearing now needs line of sight. An NPC hearing a noise on the other side of a wall used to be enough to pull it, in some cases, causing them to route through the entire dungeon to get to you. The NPC has to actually be able to see who made the noise now, or else they won’t pay it any attention.

Bystander NPCs no longer block detection. If a guard is standing in front of an archer, the archer can now see and hear past their ally instead of being shielded by their hitbox.

2. Direct Aggro from damage or harmful effects

If a player damages an NPC or applies another aggro-generating effect, that NPC gains Direct Aggro against that player. This does not require line of sight.

If an NPC is not already engaged in combat, it can gain Direct Aggro against the first player it notices through vision or hearing.

Healing or applying beneficial effects to a player who already has Direct Aggro can also cause the NPC to gain Direct Aggro against the support player.

NPCs with Direct Aggro can call nearby allies to assist them. An NPC only responds if it is social with the caller, within Assist Range, and has line of sight to the calling NPC.

No more accidental dungeon-floor chain pulls. Pulling one NPC used to be able to ripple across an entire floor.

Allies leave the assist network the moment their friend disengages. When an NPC starts walking home, it stops being part of its buddies' "available helpers" list straight away. You won't be dragged back into a fight you've already won by a late call from a leashing NPC.

An NPC that joined through Assist Aggro can be promoted to Direct Aggro if the player damages it, enters its vision range, or enters its hearing range. Once promoted, that NPC can also call for an assist.

NPCs already engaged in combat do not generate new vision or hearing aggro. A player can pass near an ongoing fight without being pulled in, as long as they do not damage enemies or support players already in combat.

If a player stops generating aggro toward an NPC, aggro starts to decay after a short time. Decay happens faster based on how far the NPC is from home and how far the player is from the NPC. If aggro decays all the way down to zero, the NPC disengages and proceeds to walk back to their home location.

After disengaging, NPCs won’t re-aggro immediately based on vision, hearing or assist for a couple of seconds. While they’re walking home, they can still be aggroed through any normal means.

Once disengaged, NPCs don't silently "remember" you at extreme range. Once an NPC gives up on a target, its aggro is completely reset.

NPCs that genuinely can't reach you will give up. If an NPC spends a sustained period unable to reach a player who is dealing it damage, it will disengage and walk home, with a longer cooldown before it can re-engage.

Aggro decay pauses while the NPC is actively fighting, either when the player generates aggro against the NPC or when the NPC successfully attacks the player.
